The problem
Subscriptions and other recurring charges depend on stored card details. When a card expires, is lost or is reissued, the next charge is declined unless the merchant already has the new details. Visa Account Updater, Mastercard ABU and real-time RTAU, Discover GAU and Amex Cardrefresher each provide those updates, separately.
My role
- As Technical Lead, I designed the unified account updater service.
- As Engineering Manager, I owned it in production and ran network onboarding and certification.
What the team delivered
One account updater service across Visa VAU, Mastercard ABU and RTAU, Discover GAU and Amex Cardrefresher.
Outcome
The service contributed to an approximately 33% reduction in updater-addressable recurring-payment declines.
Ownership
The platforms belong to Pagos and were built by its engineering team, which I led. Pagos engaged me full-time, contracted through my company, which also placed one engineer on the team.
